Energy Sector, 2014: Current project

Black Crystal were commissioned to undertake the Zimbabwean socio-economic component of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the Kariba Dam wall rehabilitation project. The Study will be undertaken to IFC standards.

Energy Sector, Hydro Electric 2014: Current project

Black Crystal was awarded the Social Impact Assessment for the building of a Hydro-Electric Scheme in Batoka Gorge on the Zambezi River.

Housing Development, 2012-2014: Current project

Black Crystal were appointed to undertake the socio-economic issues including public and stakeholder consultations and a resettlement study for a large mixed use development planned on the outskirts of Harare.

Mining Sector, 2014

Black Crystal was appointed to undertake a socio-economic assessment for gold mining prospecting activities.

Energy Sector, 2013-2014

Black Crystal in association with Epoch Resources, South Africa and Sustainability Australia were appointed to undertake a Social Audit and compile a Social Management Plan for the upgrading of Hwange Power Station.

Mining Sector, 2013-2014

Black Crystal Consulting were retained to undertake the second SEAT (Social Economic Assessment Toolkit) review for Unki Mine. Through the review Unki Mine was able to build a profile of communities affected by the mine, identify social impacts and provide an essential planning tool that will assist Unki Mine develop sustainable stakeholder relations as the basis for local accountability.

Mixed Use Development, 2013

Black Crystal were responsible for the compilation of a socio-economic assessment for the environmental prospectus for a mixed use development consisting of hotel, retail and private apartments located on the outskirts of the Central Business District.

Energy Sector, 2013

Black Crystal undertook the socio-economic assessment for an Environmental Prospectus report and an Environmental Impact Assessment report for a mini hydroelectric scheme in Honde Valley. Black Crystal was also commissioned to compile a Social Management System for the project, to comply with the IFC Performance Standards.

Mining Sector, 2012

Black Crystal was responsible for the collection of baseline social data of a quarry stone and agricultural lime mining operation. Recommendations were provided for social responsibility.

Mining Sector, 2011

Together with the South African based consulting company, Turgis (Pty) Ltd, Black Crystal undertook a socio-economic assessment of the planned re-opening and expansion of Indarama gold mine. During the scoping study a number of potential issues emerged that required in-depth analysis. Key issues included in-migration of job seekers and the location of housing for the mineworkers and their families.

Mining Sector, 2011

Black Crystal undertook a conceptual study to assess the opportunities and risks in developing the available surrounding mining resources around Unki Platinum Mine in a safe, cost-effective and sustainable manner. An integral part of the study was the assessment of social requirements. Social high-level risks were identified. Recommendations were provided for reducing/mitigating potential ‘fatal flaws’ and social risks, enhancing opportunities and developing an optimized business case and for it to comply with all social requirements.

Chicken Farm, 2011

Black Crystal undertook a socio-economic impact assessment for the construction for a proposed chicken farm on an eight hectare plot in an area of peri-urban agricultural land in Ruwa. Key issues included Environmental Health and waste management.

Energy Sector, 2011

Black Crystal undertook a socio-economic assessment for the Environmental Prospectus Report and Environmental Impact Assessment on a hydro-electric power scheme on the Pungwe River, Honde Valley. Issues included compensation for crops and corporate social responsibility issues.

Community Irrigation Scheme, 2011

Black Crystal were appointed to undertake an socio-economic assessment as a part of a preliminary environmental impact report for a leading food security NGO involved in building the Mugondi-Musirizwi irrigation scheme in the Chipinge District.

Tourism Sector, 2011

Black Crystal was appointed to carry out a socio-economic assessment as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for an upmarket photographic safari camp in a remote area of Hwange National Park.

Fuel Facility, 2011

Black Crystal was responsible for compiling a socio-economic assessment as part of the Environmental Prospectus report for the refurbishment of an existing fuel facility located southwards of the capital Harare.

Mining Sector, 2010

Black Crystal was commissioned to undertake a socio-economic assessment as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the upgrading of Route 32 by Unki Platinum Mines. Key issues included public and animal safety, accident prevention, dust and on-going community relations.

New Office Headquarters, 2010

Black Crystal were appointed to carry out a socio-economic study as part of the Environmental Prospectus followed by an Environmental Impact Assessment for the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe for a proposed new facility located in Harare. Key concerns for the residents living around the business park was a potential increase of vehicular travel.

Mining Sector, 2009

Black Crystal was appointed by Unki Mines Pvt Ltd to undertake a socio-economic study as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for a housing project for staff working at Unki Platinum Mine in Shurugwi. The key issues included: Potential for illegal dwellings and activities to develop around the housing site and potential spread of communicable diseases.

Mining Sector, 2008 - 2009

Black Crystal undertook a post resettlement assessment exercise of families resettled to make way for the development of Unki Mine, Shurugwi and associated infrastructure.

Bream Fisheries Project, 2008

Black Crystal was commissioned to undertake a socio-economic impact assessment of a proposed bream farm on Fothergill Island, Kariba. The study involved an intensive consultation process with stakeholders regarding the project. These included the local Chief, Governor of Mashonaland West and Parks and Wildlife representatives.

Baseline Corporate Social Report, 2008

Black Crystal was commissioned by The Gordonsbury Company linen exporting company in Darwendale to undertake an initial baseline Corporate Social assessment.

Tourism Sector, 2007

Black Crystal was commissioned to undertake a socio-economic study as part of the initial Environmental Prospectus for a proposed tourist facility in Victoria Falls is located within a World Heritage Site.

Socio-economic Impact Assessment, 2004 - 2005

Black Crystal was appointed by Hippo Valley Estates, Chiredzi to undertake a socio-economic impact assessment (SEAT) of their operations and activities on the surrounding communities. The consultancy included undertaking extensive consultations with stakeholders to assess their concerns on the operations and activities of Hippo Valley Estates.
